When we read God's Word, we find no instance of a saint as being someone to whom has been given a special title regarding their particular activities on earth - an honor conferred to a person considered to be a "hero of the faith." But, according to some false teachers today, saints are "canonized" or recognized by church officials after having died. Their life is scrutinized for outstanding godly behaviour, selfless dedication to God, and they supposedly have to have at least one miracle attributed to them. But this is contrary to what we see in the Bible. The saints of the Bible, to begin with, are not exclusively dead! No, they are alive. They comprise all those who have been obedient to the will of God. They are baptized Christians. "Saint" is not a title - it is a descriptive term, meaning "called out, sanctified, holy." Saints are all those who are in the body of Christ. The Greek word translated saint is hagios: (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint. The NAB is one of the few Bible versions which translates the word not as "saints" but as "holy ones." As per the definition above, this is not really wrong - it is, however, a clever avoidance of the proper term, and it serves to circumvent the real meaning and not bring into question the widespread teaching of canonized saints as an elite group. Canonization of dead saints was not doctrine until Pope John XV in 995 A.D. declared it so. I do find it interesting to note that the one instance in the NAB where hagios is translated "saints" is in the following verse: Matthew 27:52-53 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
